Clove Oil

Syzygium aromaticum (Eugenia caryophyllata)

Product History

Clove essential oil has a long and rich history rooted in ancient trade, traditional medicine, and cultural rituals. It is derived from the dried flower buds of the clove tree, scientifically known as Syzygium aromaticum, which is native to the Maluku Islands of Indonesia, historically called the Spice Islands. As early as 200 BCE, cloves were highly valued in Chinese and Ayurvedic medicine for their antiseptic, digestive, and pain-relieving properties, often used to freshen breath and treat toothaches.

During the Middle Ages, clove became one of the most sought-after spices in Europe, playing a key role in global trade. Arab traders initially controlled its distribution, keeping its origin secret, until European explorers eventually reached the Spice Islands. The demand for cloves contributed significantly to colonial expansion and conflicts, particularly involving the Portuguese and Dutch, who sought to monopolize its production and trade.

Distillation Process

  • Harvesting and Chopping Preparation
Clove buds are harvested from the Syzygium aromaticum when they turn pink before fully blooming. The buds are then dried under sunlight to reduce moisture content. After drying, they are crushed or coarsely chopped to increase the surface area for efficient oil extraction.
  • Steam Generation and Distillation
The prepared clove buds are placed into a distillation chamber where steam is passed through them. The heat from the steam helps release the essential oil from the plant material without burning it, carrying the volatile oil compounds along with the steam.
  • Condensation & Oil Separation
The steam mixed with clove oil vapors is cooled in a condenser, turning it back into liquid. This liquid then enters a separator where the essential oil naturally separates from the water due to differences in density, allowing the oil to be collected.
  • Filtration & Storage
The extracted clove oil is filtered to remove impurities and any remaining water particles. It is then stored in dark, airtight containers to protect it from light and oxidation, ensuring long shelf life and maintaining its therapeutic properties.
