Nutmeg Oil

Myristica fragrans

Product History

Nutmeg seed oil is derived from the dried seeds of Myristica fragrans, a tropical evergreen tree native to the Banda Islands of Indonesia, historically known as the “Spice Islands.” The use of nutmeg dates back thousands of years, where it was highly valued in ancient trade routes connecting Asia, the Middle East, and Europe. During the medieval period, nutmeg became one of the most prized spices in Europe, often associated with wealth, protection against disease, and culinary luxury.

The essential oil of nutmeg began to gain prominence with the development of steam distillation techniques, which allowed extraction of its concentrated aromatic compounds. Traditionally, it was used in Ayurvedic and traditional Chinese medicine for its warming, digestive, and stimulating properties. Over time, nutmeg seed oil became popular in perfumery, food flavoring, and therapeutic applications due to its spicy, sweet aroma and beneficial properties.

Distillation Process

  • Harvesting and Chopping Preparation
Mature nutmeg seeds are harvested from the Myristica fragrans tree once the fruit splits open naturally. The seeds are separated, dried, and then lightly crushed or chopped to increase the surface area for efficient oil extraction.
  • Steam Generation and Distillation
The crushed nutmeg seeds are placed in a distillation unit where steam is passed through the plant material. The heat from the steam helps release the volatile aromatic compounds, turning them into vapor along with the steam.
  • Condensation & Oil Separation
The vapor mixture of steam and essential oil passes through a condenser where it cools and converts back into liquid form. The oil and water naturally separate due to differences in density, allowing the essential oil to be collected.
  • Filtration & Storage
The extracted nutmeg essential oil is filtered to remove any impurities or residues. It is then stored in airtight, dark glass containers to preserve its quality, aroma, and therapeutic properties.
