Basil Essential Oil

Ocimum basilicum

Product History

Basil essential oil, extracted from Ocimum basilicum, carries a rich heritage that dates back over 5,000 years, with its origins rooted in India and other regions of tropical Asia. In these early cultures, basil was not only valued for its medicinal properties but also held deep spiritual significance, often used in rituals and traditional healing practices. In Ayurveda, it was widely applied to manage infections, respiratory issues, and to promote overall vitality.

The herb later spread to ancient Egypt, where it was utilized in embalming processes due to its preservative and purifying qualities. In ancient Greece, basil—derived from the word “basilikon,” meaning “royal”—was highly regarded for its therapeutic benefits and symbolic importance. Over time, basil essential oil has continued to be recognized globally for its versatile applications, ranging from natural medicine to aromatherapy, maintaining its status as both a healing and culturally significant botanical.

Distillation Process

  • Raw Material Selection:
Fresh, high-quality basil leaves (Ocimum basilicum) are carefully selected to ensure optimal oil content and aroma profile.
  • Preparation:
Leaves are often pre-cut or slightly crushed to enhance oil extraction efficiency.
  • Methodology:
While steam distillation is standard, other methods include hydrodistillation (boiling leaves in water) and advanced solvent-free microwave extraction (SFME).
  • Yield & Quality:
Yield ranges between 0.4–0.6%, or approximately 4–6 kg of oil from 1000 kg of plant material, depending on leaf quality and distillation technique.
  • Filtration & Storage:
The extracted oil is filtered to remove impurities and stored in airtight, dark glass containers to preserve its potency, aroma, and chemical stability.
