Cardamom Oil

Elettaria cardamomum

Product History

Cardamom essential oil is derived from the seeds of Elettaria cardamomum, a plant native to the lush forests of southern India, particularly the Western Ghats. Its use dates back thousands of years to ancient Ayurvedic practices, where cardamom was valued for its digestive, respiratory, and aromatic properties. The spice was highly prized in early trade routes, reaching ancient Egypt, Greece, and Rome, where it was used in perfumes, incense, and medicinal preparations.

The extraction of essential oil from cardamom seeds became more refined with the development of steam distillation techniques in later centuries. As global trade expanded, cardamom oil gained recognition in European herbal medicine and perfumery for its warm, spicy, and slightly sweet aroma. During the 19th and 20th centuries, it became a popular ingredient in the flavoring and fragrance industries, especially in foods, beverages, and oral care products.

Today, cardamom essential oil is widely used in aromatherapy, natural wellness products, and cosmetics. It is appreciated for its uplifting scent, antimicrobial properties, and ability to support digestion and respiratory health, maintaining its long-standing reputation as both a therapeutic and luxury botanical extract.

Distillation Process

  • Harvesting and Chopping Preparation
Mature cardamom pods are hand-harvested just before full ripening to preserve maximum oil content. The pods are then cleaned and lightly crushed or chopped to expose the seeds, which helps release the essential oil more efficiently during distillation.
  • Steam Generation and Distillation
Steam is produced in a boiler and passed through the crushed cardamom seeds inside a distillation chamber. The heat from the steam causes the oil glands in the seeds to rupture, allowing the essential oil to vaporize along with the steam.
  • Condensation and Oil Separation
The steam carrying the volatile oil passes through a condenser, where it cools and turns back into liquid. This liquid mixture of water and essential oil flows into a separator, where the lighter cardamom essential oil naturally separates from the water.
  • Filtration & Storage
The extracted oil is filtered to remove any impurities or moisture. It is then stored in airtight, dark glass or stainless steel containers to protect it from light, heat, and oxidation, ensuring the oil retains its quality and aroma.
