Carrot Seed Oil

Daucus carota

Product History

Carrot seed essential oil is derived from the seeds of the wild carrot plant, scientifically known as Daucus carota, which is native to Europe and parts of Asia. Its use dates back to ancient civilizations such as the Egyptians, Greeks, and Romans, who valued carrot extracts for their medicinal and cosmetic properties, particularly for skin care and rejuvenation. However, the essential oil itself began to gain prominence much later with the development of steam distillation techniques in the 17th and 18th centuries.

Traditionally, carrot seed oil was used in folk medicine for detoxification, digestive support, and improving liver function. In the early 20th century, it became more widely recognized in aromatherapy and natural skincare due to its rich content of antioxidants and its reputed ability to promote skin regeneration and reduce signs of aging. Today, carrot seed essential oil is a popular ingredient in high-end cosmetic formulations, wellness products, and holistic healing practices, appreciated for its earthy aroma and therapeutic benefits.

Distillation Process

  • Harvesting and Chopping Preparation
Mature carrot seeds (Daucus carota) are harvested when fully dried on the plant. The seeds are then cleaned to remove dust and impurities. Light crushing or chopping is sometimes done to increase the surface area, which helps release more essential oil during distillation.
  • Steam Generation and Distillation
The prepared seeds are placed into a distillation chamber. Steam is generated in a separate boiler and passed through the plant material. The heat causes the oil glands in the seeds to rupture, releasing aromatic compounds that vaporize along with the steam.
  • Condensation Oil Separation
The steam carrying essential oil vapors moves into a condenser, where it cools down and turns back into liquid. This liquid mixture of water and oil flows into a separator. Since essential oil is lighter than water, it naturally separates and floats on top, making it easy to collect.
  • Filtration & Storage
The collected oil is filtered to remove any remaining particles or moisture. It is then stored in dark glass bottles or stainless steel containers to protect it from light and oxidation, preserving its quality and therapeutic properties.
