Cedarwood Essential Oil

Cedrus deodara / Juniperus virginiana

Product History

The earliest recorded references to the use of cedarwood essential oil date back to around 1800 BC, as evidenced by ancient Sumerian clay tablets that have been preserved over time. These records highlight the advanced knowledge and practical applications of natural plant extracts in early civilizations. The Sumerians utilized cedarwood oil for a variety of purposes, demonstrating its versatility and value in daily life.

One of its primary uses was as a base ingredient in paints, which they applied to decorate pottery and other crafted items, indicating its role not only in functionality but also in aesthetic expression. Additionally, due to its natural preservative and aromatic properties, cedarwood oil was likely used in early forms of preservation and ritualistic practices. This long-standing history reflects how cedarwood essential oil has been recognized for its durability, fragrance, and utility since ancient times, continuing to be valued across generations.

Distillation Process

  • Material Preparation:
Cedarwood is harvested and broken down into small, processed pieces or shavings (bark, trunk, roots) to enhance oil yield efficiency.
  • Steam Generation:
Steam is introduced into a distillation container containing the raw wood material, releasing the essential oil from the oil glands without burning it.
  • Condensation:
The vaporized mixture of steam and oil passes through a condenser (cooling coil), which converts the vapor back into liquid form.
  • Oil Separation:
The condensed liquid is collected in a separator, where the essential oil naturally separates from water due to density differences.
  • Filtration & Storage:
The extracted oil is filtered to remove impurities and stored in airtight, dark containers to maintain its purity, aroma, and stability.
