Frankincense Essential Oil

Boswellia serrata (Indian Frankincense)

Product History

Frankincense essential oil has a long and rich history that dates back thousands of years, originating from the resin of Boswellia trees native to regions of the Arabian Peninsula and parts of Africa. In ancient civilizations such as Egypt, Mesopotamia, and India, frankincense was highly valued for its aromatic, medicinal, and spiritual properties. The ancient Egyptians used it in religious rituals, embalming practices, and skincare preparations, while it also played a central role in incense offerings in temples and sacred ceremonies.

The oil gained widespread recognition through historic trade routes, especially the famous Incense Route, where it was considered as valuable as gold. It is also widely known from biblical references, where frankincense was one of the gifts presented to Jesus, symbolizing holiness and divinity. Over time, traditional healing systems like Ayurveda and Traditional Chinese Medicine incorporated frankincense for its anti-inflammatory and calming effects.

In modern times, frankincense essential oil is extracted through steam distillation of the resin and is widely used in aromatherapy, natural medicine, skincare, and wellness products. Its timeless appeal continues due to its grounding fragrance and therapeutic benefits, bridging ancient traditions with contemporary holistic practices.

Distillation Process

  • Harvesting and Chopping & Preparation
The resin is obtained by making small cuts in the bark of Boswellia trees. The tree releases a milky sap that hardens into tear-shaped resin after exposure to air, which is then collected.
The hardened resin tears are cleaned and sometimes crushed into smaller pieces to increase the surface area for efficient oil extraction.
  • Steam Generation and Distillation
The prepared resin is placed in a distillation unit where steam is passed through it. The heat causes the aromatic compounds to evaporate along with the steam.
  • Condensation & Oil Separation
The steam carrying the essential oil vapors is cooled in a condenser, turning it back into liquid. The oil naturally separates from the water due to differences in density.
  • Filtration & Storage
The extracted oil is filtered to remove impurities and then stored in airtight, dark glass containers to preserve its quality and prevent degradation.
