Geranium Essential Oil

Pelargonium graveolens

Product History

Geranium essential oil has a long and layered history rooted in traditional medicine and perfumery. Although the plant is native to South Africa, it was introduced to Europe in the 17th century, where it quickly gained popularity for its fragrant leaves and therapeutic properties. By the 18th and 19th centuries, countries like France, Egypt, and later China began cultivating geranium commercially to extract its essential oil, which became a valuable substitute for the more expensive rose oil in perfumes.

The oil, derived mainly from Pelargonium graveolens, was widely used in early herbal practices for balancing skin conditions, improving circulation, and promoting emotional well-being. During the Victorian era, geranium oil was commonly used in cosmetics and household remedies, reflecting its versatility and pleasant floral scent. Over time, it became an important ingredient in the fragrance, aromatherapy, and skincare industries, maintaining its reputation as a natural healer and aromatic enhancer even in modern wellness practices.

Distillation Process

  • Harvesting and Chopping & Preparation
Fresh leaves and tender stems of Pelargonium graveolens are harvested, usually just before flowering when the oil content is at its peak. Harvesting is often done in the early morning to preserve aroma and quality. The collected plant material is cleaned and chopped into smaller pieces to increase the surface area, which helps in better oil extraction during distillation.
  • Steam Generation and Distillation
The prepared plant material is placed in a distillation chamber. Steam is passed through it, causing the oil glands to rupture and release essential oil vapors along with steam.
  • Condensation & Oil Separation
The vapor mixture of steam and oil is cooled in a condenser, turning it back into liquid. The oil naturally separates from water due to density differences and is collected from the separator.
  • Filtration & Storage
The extracted oil is filtered to remove impurities and then stored in dark glass bottles or stainless steel containers to protect it from light, heat, and oxidation, ensuring longer shelf life and quality.
