Ginger Oil

Zingiber officinale

Product History

Ginger essential oil is derived from the rhizome of the ginger plant, scientifically known as Zingiber officinale, which has been valued for thousands of years in traditional medicine and trade. Its origins trace back to ancient regions of India and China, where ginger was widely used in Ayurvedic and Chinese healing systems for its warming, digestive, and anti-inflammatory properties. As global trade expanded during the spice trade era, ginger became a highly sought-after commodity, spreading to the Middle East, Africa, and Europe. The process of extracting ginger essential oil through steam distillation developed later, enhancing its medicinal and aromatic applications. In modern times, ginger essential oil is widely used in aromatherapy, cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, and food flavoring due to its stimulating aroma and therapeutic benefits, maintaining its reputation as both a traditional remedy and a valuable commercial product.

Distillation Process

  • Harvesting and Chopping Preparation: Fresh rhizomes of Zingiber officinale are harvested at full maturity, thoroughly washed to remove soil, and then sliced or crushed into smaller pieces to increase the surface area for efficient oil extraction.

  • Steam Generation and Distillation: The prepared ginger pieces are placed in a distillation unit where steam is passed through the plant material, breaking the oil glands and allowing the volatile aromatic compounds to vaporize along with the steam.

  • Condensation & Oil Separation: The steam carrying essential oil vapors is cooled in a condenser, converting it back into liquid form, after which the oil naturally separates from the water due to density differences.

  • Filtration & Storage: The extracted ginger essential oil is filtered to remove impurities and then stored in airtight, dark glass containers to preserve its quality, aroma, and therapeutic properties.
