Lemongrass Essential Oil

Cymbopogon citratus / C. flexuosus

Product History

Lemongrass essential oil has a long history rooted in traditional medicine and aromatic practices, especially across South and Southeast Asia. The plant, scientifically known as Cymbopogon citratus, has been used for centuries in countries like India, Sri Lanka, and Thailand, where it was valued for its refreshing citrus aroma and therapeutic properties. Traditionally, it was used in herbal remedies to treat fever, digestive issues, and infections, and was often brewed into teas or applied as a natural antiseptic.

The extraction of lemongrass essential oil became more refined during the colonial period when steam distillation techniques were introduced and commercialized. By the 19th century, lemongrass oil had entered global trade, particularly through India, which became one of the largest producers and exporters. Its high citral content made it especially valuable in the perfume and flavoring industries, where it was used as a key ingredient in soaps, cosmetics, and beverages.

Distillation Process

  • Harvesting and Chopping Preparation
Fresh lemongrass leaves (from Cymbopogon citratus) are harvested at the right maturity stage to ensure maximum oil content. The grass is then chopped into smaller pieces to increase surface area, which helps in efficient oil extraction during distillation.
  • Steam Generation and Distillation
Steam is generated in a boiler and passed through the chopped lemongrass material. The heat causes the plant’s oil glands to rupture, releasing essential oil vapors along with steam. This process is known as Steam Distillation.

  • Condensation & Oil Separation
The mixture of steam and oil vapors is cooled in a condenser, turning it back into liquid form. The liquid then flows into a separator where the essential oil naturally separates from water due to differences in density.

  • Filtration & Storage
The extracted lemongrass essential oil is filtered to remove impurities and then stored in airtight, dark glass containers to protect it from light, heat, and oxidation, ensuring longer shelf life and maintained quality.
