Vetiver Essential Oil

Vetiveria zizanoides (Chrysopogon zizanioides)

Product History

Vetiver essential oil is derived from the roots of the Chrysopogon zizanioides plant, a tall perennial grass native to India, where it has been used for centuries in traditional practices. Historically, vetiver roots were valued for their cooling properties and were woven into mats, fans, and curtains to scent and refresh living spaces in hot climates. The oil itself was traditionally extracted through steam distillation and became an important ingredient in Ayurvedic preparations for its grounding and calming effects. Over time, vetiver essential oil gained global recognition, particularly in perfumery, where its deep, earthy, and woody aroma made it a key base note in many classic and modern fragrances. Today, it is widely used in aromatherapy, cosmetics, and natural wellness products, while India remains one of the leading producers and exporters of high-quality vetiver oil.

Distillation Process

  • Harvesting and Chopping Preparation
Vetiver roots are harvested after 12–18 months of growth when oil content is highest. The roots are carefully cleaned to remove soil and impurities, then chopped into smaller pieces to increase the surface area for efficient oil extraction.
  • Steam Generation and Distillation
The chopped roots are placed in a distillation chamber where steam is passed through them. The heat causes the essential oil present in the roots to vaporize along with the steam, carrying the aromatic compounds.
  • Condensation and Oil Separation
The steam mixed with oil vapors passes through a condenser, where it cools and turns back into liquid. This liquid is then collected, and since oil and water do not mix, the vetiver essential oil separates naturally from the water layer.
  • Filtration & Storage
The extracted oil is filtered to remove any remaining impurities and then stored in airtight, dark glass containers to preserve its quality, aroma, and therapeutic properties over time.
